With less ice in the locale, polar bears make some harder memories discovering food to eat and afterward they sadly bite the dust of starvation. The answer for this issue isn't generally conceivable. Once more, utilizing less non-renewable energy source might help. Conceivably achieving mindfulness the issue could carry open strain to the administration to do something. However, until that would occur, we can just observe the impacts environmental change has on this all in all, the Coastal Plains, the Western Cordillera, and the Arctic have genuine ecological issues that can for all time change the world. The one thing that these areas share for all intents and purpose is that they are totally affected by environmental change/a worldwide temperature alteration. Iago in William Shakespeares Othello Essay examples -- Shakespeare Ch
Iago in William Shakespeare's Othello Iago has numerous thought processes in wrecking different characters in the play. One of these is envy. Iago is desirous of Othello, Desdemona, Cassio and even his own better half, Emilia. He is envious of Othello for numerous reasons. Iago needs the force and the regard that Othello has. We see this in Act 2 scene 1 where Iago says ââ¬Ëthe moor-howbeit I suffer him not-is of a steady, cherishing, honorable natureââ¬â¢ which insights that he needs what Othello has as they are the two contrary energies and these properties might be the ones he should pick up power. Iago is desirous of Othelloââ¬â¢s marriage with the senatorââ¬â¢s girl as it gives Othello significantly more force and an appealing spouse he begrudges Othello for his better half as he states ââ¬ËI do cherish her tooââ¬â¢ which propose that Iago may have sentiments towards Desdemona making him progressively envious of what Othello has. Likewise Iago is unrefined and bigot and consistently considers Othello the ââ¬Ëmoorââ¬â¢ which is a supremacist term. This could be the explanation behind his desire as he finds the way that Othello is above him very unnatural. In his monologue, Iago states ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢s done my officeââ¬â¢ alluding to Othello, which implies Othello has laid down with his better half creation him considerably more desirous, despite the fact that he doesn't have the foggiest idea whether it is valid or not. Iago is additionally envious of Desdemona. He needs to be in her place-he needs to be a powerful individual to Othello-he needs to be nearer to him in this way closer to control. He contorts the way that Othello is enthusiastic and fixated on Desdemona to further his own potential benefit. We see this when Iago states that he will ââ¬Ëput the field in any event into a desire so solid that judgment can't cureââ¬â¢ implying that Iago will utilize... ...om Cassio) with his words and need not use them any longer. We are left to make our own personalities up regarding why Iago did it. There are implies to a great extent yet we don't have any acquaintance with him well enough to finish up what his reasons were from the proof we get all through the play. We can't be certain that Iago was letting us know his actual musings in his discourses about Othello and Cassio having laid down with Emilia. May be he is motiveless: he just creates motivations to be awful. We don't know about the issue circumstance anyplace outside Iagos discourses. He says himself ââ¬ËI am not what I amââ¬â¢ so does this not imply that anything he is by all accounts he isn't and all that he says is a falsehood. I accept that Iago is the character with the most profundity that I have ever experienced so much profundity that it turns out to be practically unimaginable to investigate him.

Free Essay Adolf Hitlers Life
Adolf Hitler's Life Introduction In terms of the world history, Adolf Hitler was a very bright and significant person, being German by nationality. The list of events connected with this person and actions performed by him made this man one of the most famous politicians and dictators of the twentieth century. The paper seeks to open some pages of the world history influenced and demolished by him and find out why even within several decades after his death he is still hated by millions of people all over the world. This research will discover important biographical facts concerning his personality. They became basic and principal in the formation of his individuality and helped Hitler add his name to the list of the cruelest and the most controversial strategists on the world. To start with, some biographical facts from Adolf Hitlers young years should be mentioned. His childhood had little in common with outrageous traits of the character he was to pick up and hold during his life, becoming a nationalist and racist. He was born in a small Austrian town not far from the German border on April 20, 1889. Hitler was the fourth child in the family, where his father worked as a custom official and was notable for his strong character that influenced all spheres of his life. However, Adolf found his real sanctuary near his mother, who became his closest friend, and the death of whom in 1908 turned out to be a great tragedy for him. Hitler had never been a scrupulous schoolboy, and had never greatly succeeded in studying. All these factors in total ended in his moving to Vienna in 1907, where he wanted to enter the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, but his attempts came to nothing. These sorrow events led to deep depression that he had to overcome within the followi ng few months. Many specialists consider this period of Hitlers life together with quickly developing nationalist ideas that were spread on the territory of Germany at that time the main factors in Adolfs outlook formation in the way of German nationalist idea idolization (Giblin, 2006). Situational Analysis It is obvious that one cannot idealize this or that political tendency without an impact of some internal and external factors. He was one with unhappy fate, since his young years were spoilt by family troubles that affected his non-stable mental conditions and estrangement from society and the whole world. Those gaps in his soul were filled with German nationalist ideas. However, external factors turned out to be much more powerful (Kershaw, 1991). After the death of Hitlers father in 1903 and after his mother had passed away in 1907, Adolf became alone and forgotten orphan. Germany became his new family, which Hitler wanted to serve in the World War I. For the first time, Adolf Hitler felt that he was created for some high aim, and his personality can provide Germany with a great and strong leader. Being among volunteers, Hitler entered the German army, and as many of them, he longed for a short war that would be undoubtedly a victory of Germany. However, unfortunately, it did not come true. Hitlers leadership peculiarities gave him an opportunity to stand as a head of one of the military units during his first engagement, when enemies were thousands of British and Belgians soldiers that Germans were to face near Yres. Most soldiers from the Hitlers subdivision were struck down, but their leader came out dry without any injury. Many chronologists still emphasize the so-called Hitlers military luck. No matter in what cruel batt le he took part, he always managed to survive. However, his luck came to an end, when Hitler was wounded in leg in the course of the Battle of the Somme. He was sent to hospital and soon was charged with a duty in Munich. Being a warrior in his soul, mental or physical, he was eager to return to the front and be involved in military actions in March 1917. Hitler was nominated for a plenty of awards, particularly the Iron Cross First Class, but soon the news that the war was over and the fact that Germany was to be declared a republic came as an explosion to his mind and he plunged into depression again. During this period, Adolf hesitated what kind of life he would live further. Having some success as a painter and possessing some experience before the war, he could not choose between the political career and the creative one. At that time, he faced the most crucial decision in his life. After having finished agitation courses, having impressed some anti-Semitic public speakers and having attracted attention of many Germans, all doubts disappeared. Though Hitler realized that there would be no way back, he entered the ranks of the German Workers Party and became a political leader in this way. He introduced many new tendencies and ideas for party development. He was pleased neither with its structure, nor with the activities of people who worked there. He included all these views in one of the most famous works calledMein Kampf. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s the Taming of the Shrew Analyzing Kate
The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s most popular plays. It is both a witty and complex play with characters that are appealing and believable drawn from life and based on a keen understanding of human nature. One can see this in the main character of the play, the shrew Katherine. Critics and Shakespearean scholars have often wondered about Kateââ¬â¢s character. Conjectures for the reasons of Kateââ¬â¢s shrewd behavior as well as her tameness have puzzled scholars for ages. This essay will attempt to decipher Kateââ¬â¢s shrewish character from the beginning with her father and sister, through the middle with her first meeting of Petruchio, to the finale where she is finally tamed. There is a strong underlying notion that Kateââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Clearly then, a case can be made for Baptista as a biased and thoughtless father, Bianca as a spoiled child who knows how to give herself an angelic appearance, and Katherine as a neglected, hurt, and humiliated daughter who disguises her grief from herself, as well as from others, with a noisy, shrewish temper. Katherineââ¬â¢s shrewdness finds itself at a plateau upon her first meeting with Petruchio. Although Petruchio initially seeks Katherine out for her dowry, we are given to believe that he likes her for her wit and her spirit, for Petruchio is a lively, adventurous man. This is clear in everything he says and does. The reader receives the impression that Petruchio decides to take on the taming of a shrew as a sort of challenge or sporting pastime. One feels, in fact, that Katherineââ¬â¢s wild temper is an attraction to this fiery man, and that he would be far less willing to marry Bianca for her fortune. If Petruchio is a mere fortune hunter, whey does he not seek Biancaââ¬â¢s hand? She not only has wealth to equal her sisterââ¬â¢s, but she also has a mild temper to go with it. Petruchioââ¬â¢s attraction to Katherineââ¬â¢s spirit helps him penetrate her shrewd shell. Essay about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - 1366 Words
Many women that become pregnant are unaware of the consequences of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and the damaging effects it has on the fetus. When a woman who is pregnant drinks alcohol, the baby is also drinking alcohol. Furthermore, the amount of alcohol that is consumed by the mother is the same amount the baby receives through the mothers placenta. Many doctors advise that it is okay for the mother to have an occasional drink, however, some women cannot stop at one drink, and they continue to drink in excess throughout their pregnancy. Still, even moderate consumption of alcohol is not wise, because it is still unknown how much alcohol the fetus is able to tolerate without potential harm. Consequently, a fetus that has beenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During the last trimester of pregnancy, the fetus lungs and liver are maturing, and the unborn babys liver is unable to handle any level of alcohol. At these stages it is critical for the mother to refrain from drinking alcohol, in order to ensure the health of the baby. Some effects to the fetus of drinking alcohol during pregnancy are: prenatal growth retardation, specifically, facial deformities, and a tendency to be smaller in weight, length, and head circumference. In addition, alcohol causes neurodevelopment defects and central nervous system dysfunction to the unborn baby. FAS infants are also at an increased risk for many common birth defects, including congenial heart disease, abnormalities of the urinary tract and genitals, and spina bifida. Although these abnormalities are not specific to FAS, they do assist in the diagnosis of the problem. Many recent studies are claiming that alcohol damages some parts of the brain more than others, targeting particular biochemical pathways vital to the development, function, migration, and survival of certain nerve cells. Further research is being done to help find ways that will block some of alcohols harmful effects on the fetus. We will write a custom essay sample on Facebook Ipo or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Andrew asked you, the chief financial analyst, to investigate and prepare a report on the following issues. 1. Short-run IPO underpricing is a well-known phenomenon exists in the US stock market. Is this phenomenon unique to the US IPO firms only? In other words, does this phenomenon exist in the Australian stock market? To answer this question, you are required to investigate the short-run IPO performance in the Australia stock market. To measure the short-run IPO performance, you should calculate and analyse the initial return of IPOs that were listed on Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) from June, 1 2009 to May 31, 2010 and remain listed up until its 2 year anniversary. The initial return (Ritter, 1991, p. 7) equals [(the last trading price at the end of the first day of trading -initial offering price)/ initial offering price] * 100. Download the list of IPO firms with their issue price and the first trading day closing price from Morningstar DatAnalysis. The initial offering price is called the issue price in DatAnalysis. Please make sure that you select the adjusted price for the closing price. Critically analyse the results of your calculation using the entire sample and describe the insights that could be gained from the calculation. For instance, you could describe the results of the analysis using simple descriptive statistics such as mean, median etc. or frequency distribution. Next, categorise your data/calculations into groups using 3 variables such as industry and describe what additional insights you could gain from the analysis. You must decide on your own the grouping variables to be used and provide the justification(s) for your selection. Also, list any assumptions made in the analysis. (5 marks) 2. How do the IPO firms perform after the IPO? Examine the performance of IPO firms analysed in Question (1) 2 years after they were listed on ASX using the 2-year holding period return. Compare and contrast the 2-year performance with the initial return based on the grouping 3 variables chosen in Question (1). The formula for 2 year holding period return (Ritter, 1991, p. 4) is ? P ? Pt ? 2 ? year holding period return = ? 2 ? ? 100 ? Pt ? P2 = the adjusted closing price on the 2-year anniversary. If the first trading day is June 1, 2009, then the 2-year anniversary is June 1, 2011; if the 2-year anniversary is a non-trading day, then use the adjusted closing price of the trading day immediately prior to the 2-year anniversary; If the company is suspended from trading on the 2-year anniversary, use the available adjusted closing price, Pt = the adjusted closing market price on the first day of trading, (3 marks) 3.

The Great Gatsby The Green Light Essay Example For Students
The Great Gatsby The Green Light Essay AbeThe green light is the vision of his goal: to have Daisy. In a world where Gatsby could essentially obtain anything with his money, Daisy presented a challenge to him, because even she could not be purchased. But when, at last, Gatsby believes that Daisy is his, he no longer idolizes her. Now that he realizes he has her, she is no longer desirable. We come to this presumption when Gatsby states, Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy (the green light) had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one. Therefore the green light has no more symbolic meaning to him, and neither does Daisy. I dont believe that in our world today that we have an object that universally symbolizes the same meaning as the green light did. The green light was physically close to him but he thought he could never actually have it, it meaning Daisy. Money could be viewed in the same sense. In our society money is everywhere, but for most of us it is difficult to acquire all that is wanted. It is like the saying, So close but yet so far away. There is money everywhere we go, but its hard to get it. We cant just rob a bank, we have to earn our own assets. And in the same context, Gatsby could not go kidnap Daisy, he had to woo her and win her love. Color symbolism is really popular in novels written during the 1920s. One such example is Scott Fitzgeralds novel The Great Gatsby. There is much color symbolism in this novel, but there are two main colors that stand out more than the others. The colors green and white influence the story greatly. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. White represents the stereotypical faade that every character is hiding behind. The color green, as it is used in the novel, symbolizes different choices the character, Gatsby, can make during his life. The green element in this novel is taken from the green light at the end of the dock near Daisys house. The color itself represents serenity, as in everything is perfect. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream for getting Daisy back, because his chance has passed and everything is as it should be. This is shown with Nicks insight, .. .His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him.. . (Pg.189)Another symbolization of the color green, which contradicts the first, is the meaning go. As in a traffic light signal, most people associate green with the word and action go. This can be interpreted as meaning Gatsby should go for his dream without hesitation. It implies that Gatsby and Daisy are meant to be together and nothing should stop Gatsby from his destined happiness and love with Daisy. It inspires hope for Gatsby that he is on the right path, heading towards the best years of his life. He believes that things will soon be as they once were, only better. Im going to fix everything just the way they were before, he said nodding determinedly. Shell see.(Pg. 117. ) The last symbolization the color green has in this novel is an urge to strive ahead in life, to do better in life and succeed. Gatsby changes his entire persona for a better, more sociable, image and status. He is constantly striving to be a more successful figure in society. Ever since he was a boy he put himself on a schedule with hopes for becoming a highly respected, well-known person. .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .postImageUrl , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:hover , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:visited , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:active { border:0!important; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:active , .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u581bddb7d4adffb5be7cd15662febd3b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The short long lived beatles Essay He knew he had a big future in front of him. (Pg. 181), his dad says about him. Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this(Pg. 182).White is the other color symbolism interlaced into this novel. Where green only influenced one character, white has a wider range of influence on the characters. This color symbolizes one thing, a faade, but it appears in every character. For example, Daisy is always seen wearing white, which gives her and innocent naive appearance. It is as though she uses that as an excuse for when she does something ridiculous or childish, making it seem like she does not know any better. In reality, she knows exactly what she does but just doesnt care. She uses this little princess image and her money to hide her biased, snobbish, and conceited view of herself and her lifestyle. They were careless people, Tom and Daisythey smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together(Pg. 187-188).Another character that hides behind the white symbolic faade is Jordan Baker. She also wears white quite often. She acts as though she is superior to everyone around her. Her posture, her attitude, and even the things she says imply this arrogance. She was extended full length at her end of the divan, completely motionless and with her chin raised a little as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall. If she saw me she me out of the corner of her eyes she gave no hint of it-indeed I was almost surprised into murmuring an apology for having disturbed her by coming in. (Pg. 13). She portrays a bored and apathetic attitude about everything, which is part of her I am too good for you appearance. In reality, she just wants to be as respected and socially accepted as Gatsby. She is not willing to take responsibility for her actions and uses her image as a guard implying that she could not have possibly done anything immoral, much like Daisy. However, She was incurably dishonest. She wasnt able to endure being at a disadvantage, and given this unwillingness I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep the cool insolent smile turned towards the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body. (Pg. 63). Color symbolism is not very noticeable, yet it can tell a great deal about a story. In this case, the colors give the reader a look at the characters choices and the paths he or she could have chosen compared to the ones the character chose, which adds dimension to the story. The green the different choices Gatsby can make, whether it serves as a warning, an inspiration, or an urge to get ahead. The white symbolizes a mask, or a faade. It allows the characters to portray themselves as a whole other person and hide who they really are. This puts a piece of reality into the story, as everyone wears a white mask of some kind to hide his or her true self from the world. It is the unsubtle clues given to the reader that are fascinating and allow a person to relate to the characters.Words/ Pages : 1,209 / 24

How do the dramatic techniques used in the play help audience to understand the importance of Shirleys transformation Essay Example
How do the dramatic techniques used in the play help audience to understand the importance of Shirleys transformation? Essay In Shirley Valentine Willy Russell presents the transformation of a stifled middle-aged woman who changes dramatically from her married self. This is represented by the use of different dramatic techniques such as voiceovers, flashbacks, monologues and other effects which are some of the devices Willy Russell uses to display changes during the play. This will alter the audiences view towards Shirley a stifled, bored, middle-aged woman to an outgoing, adventurous and free woman. This play is influenced by kitchen sink drama although it is not exactly similar. A kitchen sink drama is about pessimistic working class men, with an emphasis on domestic realism and their social problems. However in this play the main protagonist is a woman. This play also contains humour unlike a kitchen sink drama but both type of play are similar as these plays are based on the unfulfilled life of the main character. This play is focused on a working class life, social problems and relationships of a woman who hasnt fulfilled her life and is stuck at home. The character of Shirley represents the frustrations of working class women who remains isolated from the outside world and instead have to dwell in work of domestic labour. From this we can tell that Willy Russell was influenced from his childhood as he had become a ladies hairdresser, a job he didnt quite enjoy, by taking his mothers advice. This job connected Russell to women and their lives where he was able to socialise w ith many women and gained an inside view of how they felt. Russell combined his problems in life to working class women, creating the relationship between Shirley and her life. But Willy Russell mocks feminism as Jane goes of with another man. Although Jane is supposed to represent feminism gone wrong in the play, we could also work out Willy Russell thoughts on feminism. However Russell isnt against feminists as he sympathises with Shirley. The title sequence and opening scenes help to establish Shirleys character as a weighed down, lonely housewife trapped in the life of domestic labour. As the movie, Shirley valentine starts we are shown different types of house chores portraying that Shirley valentine has something to do with domestic chores. During the credits for Shirley valentine we are shown sketches presenting the incompleteness, as sketches are the first draft of the final painting and this hints that there will be changes. The theme song employs the disappearance of Shirley, Shirley wasnt there anymore, but it also states I would like the chance to be the girl who used to be me. Meaning that if Shirley has a chance to change back to who she was she would take it. As the movie begins we are shown Shirley walking towards the camera loaded with shopping bag weighing her down, which changes to a street of small semi-detached houses with small front garden, this implies the narrowness of her life. When Shirley ente rs the house she sighs and the first person she talks to is the wall Hello wall. Through this monologue we can understand she is lonely because when she is using monologue we know that she is talking on her own. Altogether we can assume that she is depressed and from the theme we can say that the Shirley doing the housework isnt who she used to be. We know that she changed into someone completely different. Willy Russell uses flashback to show the audience how Shirley Valentine slowly changed into Shirley Bradshaw. This also shows us the contrast of what Shirley use to be like and how she is now. The flash back of when Shirley and Joe were newly married, shows how they were happily married as they used to be more fun, spontaneous and comfortable in their marriage. When we go back to Shirleys present state, it seems that the relationship is very boring and they are less socialised with each other. This shows how their relationship had changed from one thing to another. The flashback of where Shirley is discussing the clitoris with her friends, she states about what Joe thinks of the clitoris, and when he replies, doesnt go as well as the Ford Cortina. This employs that Joe isnt physically interested in Shirley anymore. Another flashback of how Shirley used to be like when she was young. In the scene during assembly, Willy Russell showed how school destroyed her life. When Shirley was a kid she was neglected by her teacher and was never expected to get anything right butwhen she finally did, the headmistress thought that she has cheated. Through voice over we are told, I was never really interested in school after that. I became a rebel. This informed us that she gave up her education during her childhood now as a result she is an adult with no education and is trapped in her marriage. Another flashback has shown how Shirley Valentine was like. She use to wear her school skirt so high, this shows her confidence where as in the present, she lacks this. This flash back also shows that her school life was not good I hate everything this shows her low self esteem. This flashback also states her rebellious and mischievous side, Well tickle my tits till Friday. Her personality then was opposite to Shirleys personality now. The flash back of when Shirley met Marjorie shows how Shirley life is very boring, Got a postage stamp? I will write it down for you! this shows how her life is narrow and empty and that she has done nothing interesting in her life. This flashback had also shown how she never received much love in her relationship, there was real affection in that kiss. It was the sweetest kiss Id known for years. Shirley was so affected by the way Marjorie said goodbye because the kiss was a nice, warm and comforting kiss, which she hadnt experienced in years. All these flashbacks are very effective as they help us to empathise with Shirley now by showing bit by bit of how the events in her life changed who she was to who she is. Encounters with minor characters establish Shirleys character and reveal changes in her attitude. When she meets Renos, she is then more sociable and gregarious; she is also much happier talking to him. When she is dining with the holiday makers Dougie and Jeannette, she gains more confidence. She turns to Sydney speaking with emphasis. whereas previously she wouldve spoken to the camera but now she expresses her opinions publicly. The quote most important invention of all the wheel mean that Shirley is reclaiming the young, brave Shirley valentine who was crushed by poor education and is now displaying knowledge/intelligence. She is also expressing how she is feeling, which wouldnt have done before. When Shirley meets Costas, we see the changes transforming Shirley Bradshaw to Shirley valentine. I wanna jump of the roof! This portrays that she is regaining the bravery of young Shirley, but when she was back at Liverpool she was resistant of going as she was too old. After meeting Costas Shirley tells herself Ive fallen in love with the idea as living. This displays Shirleys transformation she felt how it is to be free, to live that shes fallen in love with it. Shirley valentine uses minor characters and various comic devices to add humour, to reveal elements of Shirleys personality and to mock stereotypes. With the use of irony, sarcasm and wordplay Shirley valentine became an entertaining play. Humour is presented as a strategy in which Shirley uses to cope with her miserable life. Her witty remarks to Joe Joe: you are going round the bend. Shirley: do hope so. Ive always wanted to travel. reveals a part of the confident that Shirley once had. Minor characters also add to the humour of the screenplay. The tourist complaining about Greece being too Greek, provides entertainment. Russells use of dramatic monologue helps us to empathise with Shirley by Shirleys relationship with the audience. It helps us to feel included in Shirleys life as she reveals her inner thoughts. Monologues also create a sense of intimacy as we feel she is confiding her secrets to us, trusting us when she is talking to the camera or herself Shirley (to camera): he says he still loves me. You know this helps us feel involved, like she really is talking to us. Initially, the dramatic monologue reveals Shirleys opinion on her life, such as I do miss them, the kids highlighting her loneliness. Shirley looks unbelievingly at the camera. This includes the audience helping us to understand her reaction. Dramatic monologue helps us to empathise with Shirley. Why do we get all this life if we dont ever use it? this makes us feel that Shirley is asking us that question as well as herself. It makes us wonder about this and feel sympathy for her. Thats where Shirley Valentine disappeared to. She got lost in all this unused life. This quote lets us know how she feels lost. It makes us realise how hopeless Shirley feels. All of this makes us feel what she is saying. Dramatic monologue charts Shirleys developing confidence, particularly as she prepares to go to Greece. After the visit from Gillian, when Shirley describes herself as brave and marvellous the audience sees a remarkable change in Shirleys mood and self-esteem. Voiceovers help us to keep updated. Shirley (VO): Jane divorced her husbandfound him in be with the milkman This is more informative because she tells us why Jane became a feminist. This also helps us feel involved in Shirleys life. Voice over is also one of the dramatic techniques which adds Shirleys point of view in the present to the past. This creates the difference of how Shirley was feeling then and how she is feeling now young Shirley: I hate the world. I hate everything. Shirley (VO): but I didnt really hate anything. The only thing I hated was me. This also shows that Shirley is becoming more self-aware as the screenplay progresses, so that she can recognise, for example, her low self-esteem. Willy Russells use of setting highlights the difference between Shirley in Greece and Shirley in Liverpool in many ways. When Shirley was in Liverpool, she was in many scenes which represented Shirley such as small semi-detached house with small front gardens this shows the narrowness of her life. Whereas in Greece the sea lapping gently below her. This shows freedom. The atmosphere in Liverpool also represents Shirley pouring with rain. This creates a dull, sad and depressing mood which highlights the unexciting life of Shirley. However in Greece the stunning natural beauty of the place This shows how Shirley is changing as this scene is contrasting to the rain, and the shimmer of the midday sun on a calm sea this represents a strong contrast to Liverpool rainy England to sunny Greece, shows changes in Shirley. Shirley states that she loves the difference between England and Greece It was like Id come to the far side of paradise. An I loved it. Another contrast is Shirleys appearance. While Shirley was in Liverpool, Shirley usually wore cloths without any shape such as an overall, where as when Shirley is in Greece she wears cloths that show out her figure. This play is divided into scenes in Liverpool and Scenes in Greece. There are differences in scenes in Liverpool and Greece which informs us where she is and when something is happening day or night. This helps us to see where Shirley is in our head and creates an atmosphere. This also helps us know more about the flashbacks to see them as memories instead of stories. The absence of flashbacks in the Greek scenes shows that Shirley is enjoying her time in Greece as she is spending less time thinking about the past and more time thinking about the present. This presents change in Shirley as a more relaxed person. The climatic moments of the play is when Shirley is having dinner with Joe. This is the point, when Shirley decides to go to Greece for a change. Willy Russell ensures that the audience emphasises with Shirley decision to leave Joe, when Joe patronises her. He does not appreciate Shirleys hard work. When Joe pushes his plate along the table, it hits Shirleys plate and the contents tip into Shirleys lap. This became the final straw for Shirley and the audience know that Shirley must have had enough. This scene also shows that Joe uses Shirley as doormat as she has to do all the work for him, just as he wants it to be e.g. the routine. We can see that Shirley needs a break, needs to rebel and going to Greece is something the audience will agree with. My final impression of Shirleys character is that she isnt Shirley Bradshaw anymore, that her transformation to Shirley Valentine is complete. She is relaxed and peaceful where before Shirley was always stressed and depressed. When Shirley says He needs a holiday. He needs to feel the sun on his skin and to be in water thats deep as forever. This proves that shes changed so much she can now worry about Joe and his unfulfilled life. The fact that Shirley cannot be recognised by her own husband says that her visual transformation is symbolic of her emotional change. But now Im Shirley Valentine again. Shirley has reclaimed her true identity and at the end she fulfils her dreams near the setting sun showing a happy ending. From all this I can see that Shirley is now a very happy and free person and has changed for good. Overall we can see that slowly we have watched the transformation of Shirley Valentine transform into Shirley Bradshaw and change back into Shirley Valentine. She has turned from a life of captivity in house chores and boredom to freedom and adventure. This has been portrayed by the impact of dramatic techniques which creates empathy and shows past experiences, changes and her point of view on things helping us to understand this transformation.

Writing A College Application Essay For High SchoolersNow that the deadline for high schoolers has passed, it is time to start thinking about what you should write on your high school application essay. Of course, high school students will certainly have to answer questions on this document, but a number of students find that they cannot follow directions completely, or even seem to understand what they are supposed to write. For instance, one student wrote that his high school essay should 'critically examine current trends in society, society's reaction to these trends, and the direction of the United States of America.' However, his essay lacked any information about where he was currently going or what he expected the United States to be like in five years. In fact, he seemed to think he could simply declare a simple opinion and that his essays would then rise above the rest! Then there is another student who thought that he didn't need to give his opinions on anything, or have any facts at all. He wrote that his essay should merely express his feelings and opinions, rather than taking sides or giving an in-depth explanation of why he feels something. A student must always provide information, particularly if it is an essay answer question. But you don't have to include information that is not related to the topic you are addressing.Another student thought that his essays should be short and to the point and should simply state the opinion of the writer, rather than addressing individual character traits. This student also wrote that his essay should never be long, and that he did not need to take any time to do more than give a brief outline of the information he was addressing. However, while his words were to the point, they were not as well written as he might have liked. One other student wrote that he needed to be writing for another five high schoolers, and so a list of relevant facts was not necessary. As long as his essay was free of information that he should not have included, he was happy with his decision.Another student stated that he would not use facts, but only his opinion. When it came to opinions, his would be the only opinions that mattered. However, his opinion was strong, and it was the best that he could muster. It can be difficult to write a college application essay for high schoolers.
